- Presenting oral submissions
- Presenting opening and closing addresses
- Conducting examination in chief and re-examination
- Conducting cross-examination
- Dealing with objections

Both civil and criminal proceedings:
- Trainees argue a civil interlocutory application or opposition
- Trainees conduct a judge alone defended hearing as either counsel for the prosecution or counsel for the defence
- Trainees appear on a bail application
- Trainees make a plea in mitigation at sentencing
