What does ‘Taking responsibility for one’s own learning’ mean
for online learners?
The answer to this includes:
- Ensuring that you have sufficient free time (including release time from your employer of around 10 hours per week, if working full time) to do course work 6 days per week, for an average of 2.75 hours per day (weekdays) and 5.5 hours (Saturdays).
- Taking advantage of all the learning resources on offer
- Planning your time in advance – using the online calendar and other study guide aids provided in some seminars
- Completing coursework on time or ahead of the deadline and submitting this regularly for feedback – not all in a rush at the end of the week in a way that prevents assimilation of feedback on one task before proceeding to the next.
- Not waiting until the deadline to submit work, in case you do have a problem (technical or otherwise)
- Checking Announcements regularly
- Contacting support personnel promptly if experiencing a site-access issue.
- Staying in touch with your instructor (and supportive co-trainees, if you are primarily an interpersonal learner) during the distance parts of the course
- Taking pride in the appearance of the work you submit
- Making adaptations to your preferred learning style where necessary to suit the learning environment. E.g. If you are primarily an auditory learner, as an online learner, where the mode of delivery is visual, you will have to adapt your primary learning style to become more visual/kinaesthetic:
- Read all instructions out loud
- Use recitation in place of auditory learning – recitation is the single most effective method of learning – hearing oneself say the words
- Developing kinaesthetic skills – writing key points down, marking up the manual, etc.
- Ensuring study time is quality time, e.g.
- Take study leave from work in the mornings, not at the end of the day, if you are at your best in the morning.
- Set up your place for study to be free of distractions for the necessary time
- Equip yourself with the best internet connection and computer resources that you can afford.
