Graduate position | Criminal Law Practice

Devon Kemp

Devon is looking to hire a graduate or lawyer with 0 to 3 years’ PQE to assist with a busy criminal law practice.

Devon defends people charged with serious crime, predominantly serious violence, sexual violence, organised crime, money laundering, fraud, and drug supply.

Ideally you will have experience appearing in court and working in criminal law, with the equivalent of Supervised Provider or PAL 1 approval. If you are a recent graduate, you must have your legal professionals or be in the process of completing it.

The role involves assisting with administrative tasks, legal research, evidence review, the preparation of hearings, trials and appeals, and court appearances. You will be regularly appearing in court and developing your own case load, more so as your experience progresses. You will be assisting with trials, and when you are ready, running your own trials with supervision and help where necessary. Though the hours can be challenging in trials and at crunch points, work life balance is made a priority.

You will be part of Augusta Chambers, a leading chamber of barristers specialising in criminal law.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

 (a) An interest in criminal law, particularly in defence.

 (b) An interest in advocacy.

 (c) Empathy and resilience.

 (d) A strong work ethic, great organisational skills and attention to detail.

In exchange you will be exposed to regular jury trial work, appellate work; a competitive salary and a supportive, collegial environment at chambers.

To apply, email a cover letter, your academic transcript, CV, and an example of your written work (e.g., submissions, an opinion or research paper) to admin@devonkemp.com.  The start date would be in February or March 2026 with some flexibility.
